KABUL (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday said that unregistered people could not vote during upcoming Wolesi Jirga election and votes without biometric would be rejected.
IEC Spokesman Syed Hafeezullah Hashami told reporters here only people who registered as a voter could take part in the upcoming polls.
“Those who did not register as a voter but have authentic Tazkera will never be allowed to vote and no second opportunity of registration will be granted but ahead of the presidential election the registration process would be resumed,” he said.
Hashami said that biometric of the voters was essential on the Election Day and added: “The commission has decided that votes without biometric will be rejected thus the process is must on the polling day.”
Political parties have brought up a new demand saying that a large number of eligible voters did not take part in voter registration process in which a specific sticker was attached to their Tazkeras.
They suggested now that the facility of biometric is provided everyone eligible to vote should be allowed to take part in the election.
The fresh suggestion was bring presented by political parties at a time when the conduct of Wolesi Jirga election is only 15 days away and in violation with the election law.
Article six of the election law says that an eligible voter in person should refer to the polling station with original Tazkera or any other documents acknowledged by the Election Commission and register as voter.
It is also narrated in the law that the voters should cast their vote in the polling center where they had registered as a voter.
Humayon Jarer, a member of the Hizb-i-Islami Afghanistan, said that the process of attaching stickers on Tazkeras was full of fraud and therefore they stressed over the induction of biometric system during the election.
“He said if the biometric system was not operationalise in any polling station on election day the votes of that polling station will not be acceptable for political parties and movements,” he said.
