LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A group of Wolesi Jirga members on Friday did not attend a memorial service for the victims of a rocket strike in the Sangin district and remained in Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province.
Hundreds of people attended the service in Sangin on Friday, two days after several people were killed and wounded when mortars fired by Afghan troops hit a wedding party in the Mian Rodi village.
Six Afghan National Army (ANA) troops have been detained in connection with the deaths after the government launched a probe into the incident.

 
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Around 26 people were killed and another 45, mostly children and women, were wounded when several artillery and mortar shells hit a wedding party in the Sangin district of southern Helmand province, officials said on Thursday.
Helmand police chief Pacha Gul Bakhtiar told Pajhwok Afghan News the marriage party came under a barrage of rockets fired from an unidentified location in Mian Rodhi locality late on Wednesday evening.   

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): As many as 10 new faces --- young and educated --- have found their way to the 15-member provincial council of southern Helmand province.

The April 5 elections were contested by 92 individuals, with 15, including five former members, making it to the body.

Hayatullah Mayar, a youth and winner, told Pajhwok Afghan News he would honour what promises he had held out to his supporters during his campaign. He said the electoral process had been transparent because mostly youth had won seats.

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Residents of southern Helmand province have urged the unity government to bury past differences and strive for change and reforms.
Matiullah, a dweller of provincial capital Lashkargah, told Pajhwok Afghan News since the election impasse had ended, the two teams must burry past feuds. 
Another local, Shamshad, said that president-elect Ashraf Ghani and his chief executive Abdullah should pay special attention toward improving security, economy and national unity.

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Civil society activists in southern Helmand province on Sunday feared the long-awaited power-sharing deal between the two presidential candidates might prove problematic in future.

The agreement on the formation of a unity government set the stage for President Hamid Karzai’s departure from office and marked the country’s first peaceful transfer of power between elected governments.
